The retail business has been hit hard by coronavirus, and now another beloved company is closing stores to deal with the financial repercussions of the pandemic. Francesca's, a clothing store catering to teens and young adults with its trendy fashions and accessories, announced on Nov. 16 that it would be closing 140 of its stores. The soon-to-shutter stores represent approximately 20 percent of the company's total portfolio of brick-and-mortar locations spread across 48 states. The company announced its intention to close the affected stores by Jan. 31, 2021, but Francesca's may still file for bankruptcy to help alleviate its multimillion-dollar debt, MarketWatch reports. "If the company is unable to raise sufficient additional capital to continue to fund operations and pay its obligations, the company will likely need to seek a restructuring under the protection of applicable bankruptcy laws," Francesca's said in a statement.
This is far from the first indication of trouble for the once-popular brand, however; on Sept. 15, 2020, Francesca's announced in a statement that its second quarter sales had fallen by 29 percent, stating that it would "take aggressive and prudent actions to reduce expense and manage cash flows."
